I love a good s’more, but I don’t have many chances to make them on the trail anymore. Between droughts, national park fire restrictions, and my general exhaustion by the time I reach camp, it’s pretty rare for me to light a blaze, let alone roast marshmallows over it. So when I discovered this dead-simple recipe for making s’mores on a camp stove, I felt like I had found the Rosetta Stone, except for camp desserts.
This recipe uses the ingredients for a classic s’more, but combines them somewhat differently: Instead of roasting the marshmallow over a fire, it uses a water bath to heat up it, the chocolate, and any mix-ins your heart desires at a steady temperature. The result is a creamy fondue-like dip perfect for smothering graham crackers, cookies, or fruit. You won’t need much equipment, just a canister stove and a single-wall metal mug small enough to fit inside of it. At just two minutes to create (and less than that to eat), it doesn’t take much time, either, and saves you the trouble of collecting and lighting a fire.
