The Tiger Wall UL2 has remained one of our favorite shelters since it was released in 2018 (one version even won an Editors’ Choice Award). Weighing just over one pound per person and with plenty of storage pockets, floor area, and vestibule space to house two sleepers and their gear on a multiday backpacking trip, it’s near the top of the class of functional, ultralight tents. Near-vertical walls maximize livability, and featherweight materials keep it from weighing you down.

This year, though, the Tiger Wall gets a significant—and eco-friendly—upgrade. This version’s fabric is now made using a process called solution dyeing, in which the individual threads are dyed when they’re created, instead of just coloring the fabric when it’s woven. This strategy reduces the chemicals needed to dye the tent by 80 percent, and also requires 80 percent less energy and half as much water as the normal dyeing process. 

The Tiger Wall UL2’s solution-dyed fabric is no less waterproof than the previous iteration, and is actually more durable: The material is more resistant to the damage and fading caused by UV rays, and will hold up better over the long term after time spent in the sun. 

On top of that, the Tiger Wall UL2 is simply an excellent ultralight shelter. During a camping trip in Wyoming’s Bridger-Teton National Forest, the hubbed-pole design and clip-in fly made for a fast one-person setup. Condensation buildup was nil on a 40°F night, and our tester appreciated the gear loft at the foot of the tent for storing clothing. Campers can also pitch the tent fly-only, which is handy in dry and bug-free environments.

The tent is easy to pack and very light. It took just a few minutes to set up. I haven’t been able to use it in rainy conditions, but morning dew didn’t get through the fly on an overnight near Mont Saint Hilaire in Quebec.

Sleeping space might have been tight if we had our packs inside, but it was good for two sleepers when we put our packs in the vestibules. The tent also has one large gear pocket which is nice for storage, as well as smaller pockets near the head.

Because the tent packs down so small, it was easy to fit in an overnight pack. I’d probably use this tent for just myself because it’s so compact and light.
