If Idaho’s Pioneer Mountains are a diadem separating the Sawtooth and Challis National Forests just outside Sun Valley, then Hyndman Peak is the central point, an ornament rising above the range. Its pinnacle penetrates the skyline in a most aesthetically pleasing way, and, best part, you can climb right up it. The BACKPACKER staff tackled Hyndman’s southeast face in April; from our basecamp at the Pioneer Yurt(just below 8,800 feet), it was a 4-mile ski tour to the high point that required crampons and ice axes (no ropes) at the end. The descent? About 1,500 feet of 30- to 35-degree open corn skiing, and then a 3.5-mile cruiser back to the yurt. See for yourselves.
