[do-it-all shirt]

Get the sun protection of a collared, long-sleeve shirt (30 UPF) with the versatility of a button-down and the comfort of a tee. “It wicks moisture, dries fast, and the light nylon fabric (blended with 6 percent spandex) feels like a stretchy, broken-in, cotton dress shirt,” said one tester after a sunny but cool afternoon hike around New Hampshire’s Mt. Washington.

Breathable polyester/spandex underarm panels kept her cool on rigorous pitches; they also help deliver an attractively trim, tailored fit. Plus, the styling is cowboy/girl hip, thanks to pearly snap buttons and two zippered chest pockets. Guys: The men’s version lacks underarm panels and blends hollow-core polyester with 40 percent rayon—but offers the same good looks and no-nonsense performance. $70; firstascent.com
