The February appearance of the “firefall”—a trick of the winter light that makes Horsetail Fall glow red—is one of Yosemite National Park’s unique and beloved natural phenomena. But after thousands of photographers have been crowding into the park to shoot it in recent years, the park has decided to require permits for the parking area most photographers use. Roughly 300 permits per day will be available.
