Huge Year for Whale-Watching in Bay Area

Naturalists verified near-record numbers of sightings last year, with a repeat in 2018 likely.

Naturalists confirmed sightings of 232 blue whales and 825 humpback whales off the Bay Area coast last summer and fall, among the highest numbers on record. Gray whale sightings are also up near Monterey, forecasting another big year. Hot spots to see whales include the Farallones Marine Sanctuary and Monterey Bay.
