Hello, Denver hikers!
We’ve had a wonderful week of warm, sunny weather both downtown and in the mountains, which means summer is almost within reach! This weekend will likely bring some rain and thundershowers to the Front Range after the high temps this week. What this means for hiking and other mountain adventures:
Areas in the foothills should be great for dayhikes, like Roxborough State Park–Sunday, specifically, will offer some sunshine and perfect hiking temps here. Larger, higher-elevation objectives and 14ers will be less ideal this weekend, with thunderstorms expected in Idaho Springs and the Indian Peaks, and rain in Rocky Mountain National Park. For overnights, head up 285 to the Kenosha Pass area for drer weather and mostly sunny skies.
If you decide to venture deeper into the backcountry at higher elevations where there’s still plenty of snow, keep in mind that avalanche terrain is still a concern. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center has issued a warning for wet-slab avalanches across the state due to the warm days and nights above freezing.
This weekend may not present the best opportunity for bigger objectives, but get out there and enjoy some mellow dayhikes–more sunshine is on the way next week.
