If Lewisburg in the south was the ideal jumping-off point for a backpacking journey through West Virginia, the quiet mountain towns of Thomas and Davis are the perfect places to cool down and recover from it.
Seated side by side on different branches of the Blackwater River, their quiet streets and shops, delicious food and beautiful scenery had everything I needed to relax and enjoy my final few days in West Virginia.
Walk Downtown Thomas
A stroll along Route 32 near Thomas’s historic waterfront gives you the opportunity to check out some of the small shops and boutiques the town is known for. TipTop coffeehouse is a great place to unwind with a drink and snack—Not to mention speedy wifi. A slew of galleries and antique shops are also worth checking out along this important stretch.
Eat Your Fill in Davis
Davis is famous for places like Hellbender Burritos which offers delicious overstuffed burritos and tacos. But if you’re in search of something a little lighter, Big Belly Deli’s sandwiches are crammed with fresh, juicy meats. Unique extras like Dandelion Muffins are (admittedly, surprisingly) delicious add-ons.
For dinner, Wicked Wilderness Pub has hearty burgers and other pub food, as well as drinks worthy of any post-trip celebration. The West Virginia-style Wicked Hot Dog is a delicious dish, and you’ll be able to chow down surrounded by decor to match your time in the local backcountry.
