Suburbs Fight for Bike, Pedestrian Safety after Fatal Crashes Rise
New bridges, bike lanes, and crosswalks are among the proposed solutions to a spike in collisions with cars.

From 2012 to 2015, cars killed 250 and injured 9,290 cyclists and pedestrians in the Chicago suburbs, a Daily Herald analysis reports. And in 2015, fatal crashes jumped 13 percent (total collisions increased 3 percent). Towns are considering several ways to make the streets safer, including new off-road paths in Bensenville, an underpass in Algonquin, and plans for “traffic calming” measures in Arlington Heights.
