With its multicolored rhyolite cliffs, water views, and shoreline arches, the north edge of Lake Superior could do a pretty good impersonation of the Northern California coast. But its dense forests of red and white pine, birch, and aspen make it pure Minnesota. See why on the Shovel Point Trail, which packs lake vistas into a dense half mile. Back at the trailhead, tack on a 3-mile out-and-back along the Baptism River to 60-foot High Falls (the tallest cascade in Minnesota) to explore the state’s classic north woods.
