Last week, a panel of Georgia state senators voted unanimously for a bill that would change the name of Skidaway Island’s Runaway Negro Creek to Freedom Creek. State Senator Lester Jackson (D-Savannah) sponsored the bill after constituents raised concerns about the name. The creek, just north of Skidaway Island State Park, is thought to have been a barrier for escaping slaves in the 1800s.
