Group: AMC Boston

When: Saturday, February 24

Where: Sawyer River Trail, NH

Cost: Free (registration required)

Details: This trip goes off the beaten track! Snowshoe through a beautiful winter landscape breaking our own trail and possibly visiting two peaks in the Pemigewasset Range on the way.

We’ll drop transportation at the Hancock Notch trailhead off the Kancamagus Highway, and then begin on the Sawyer River Trail. We will break trail 8 miles over rolling terrain (with stream crossings) to the Hancock Notch Trail, and return to our cars. On the way, we may attempt a visit to a talus field south of the trail, and perhaps summit two of Mt. Huntington’s peaks (3770′), both on the NH “hundred highest” list, and off-trail! Minimum total distance: 10 miles over mostly rolling, occasionally steep, terrain. Possible addition of several more miles and 1200 feet of gain. An alternate route may be substituted depending on weather or trail conditions. This trip will require excellent physical endurance. WHP participants with winter day-hiking gear and prior snowshoeing experience are welcome.
