Pemi Wilderness Bridge to be Removed, Not Replaced

Popular crossing slated for removal to preserve wilderness, but opinions are split.

The US Forest Service announced recently its intentions to remove the Thoreau Falls Bridge in the White Mountains’ remote Pemigewasset Wilderness. The bridge was built in 1962 and provides a crossing of the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River there. The bridge sustained hurricane damage in recent years, and authorities made the decision to scrap it to preserve the wild character of the area—but not everyone is happy about it.
