27 Miles of Trails Open on Catalina Island
Of the island's 1 million annual visitors, only 20,000 venture into the backcountry. A new project wants to change that.

Imagine Catalina is a multi-decade project to promote conservation, preserve Catalina Island, and introduce people to more of the island’s beauty beyond the town of Avalon. The best part for hikers? The 38-mile Trans-Catalina Trail has been expanded. Originally scheduled to open this summer, the trails were delayed by torrential rain, but they’re now ready for exploration.
