Lake Placid will host the 2023 Winter World University Games, an event featuring sports like skiing, snowboarding, hockey, and figure skating for more than 2,500 college athletes. Lake Placid–which was the only bidder–pitched its Whiteface and Gore Mountain ski areas and the proposal to build a new curling center at Saranac Lake. Many of the facilities were first built to host the 1980 Winter Olympics and will be renovated over the next five years.
