The Great Range of the Adirondacks, possibly the hardest classic day hike in the East, claims some monster stats, and impressive panoramic views. Leaving Keene Valley, the route goes over seven 4,000-foot summits on its way to Mount Marcy, New York’s highest at 5,344 feet. Over nine thousand feet of ascent ends at Marcy’s highpoint, a little past half way on a 25-mile loop. Beware, Great Range veterans mention rough, rocky trails – and some airy scrambling on Mount Saddleback and Gothics.
