Abbey, an iconoclastic wilderness author, called the Atascosa Lookout “a flimsy old frame shack perched like an eagle’s nest on a pinnacle of rock 6,235 feet high.” Today, it’s still a mesmerizing place to spend the night. Sweeping views include Baboquivari’s granite spire, sacred to the Tohono O’Odham, and don’t forget about the jaguars that prowl the canyons below. Hike two and a half steep miles on the Atascosa Trail to the lookout, then 7 miles in neighboring Sycamore Canyon to scan for Elegant Trogons.
