From Talladega, home of America’s fastest NASCAR track, it’s a sedate Sunday drive past acres of wildfire-scorched pines and oaks to the medieval-looking observation tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Inside, two soda machines illuminate a metal staircase leading to a view of the undulating hills of 232,000-acre Talladega National Forest.
