Expect unexpected challenges to reach the summit

Reaching the trailhead of this remote, little-visited high point can be as challenging as finding a gas station in the Nevada desert. From Dyer, head north on NV 264 for 17.7 miles to a dirt road just south of the junction with NV 3A. Turn left (west) onto teeth-jarring Trail Canyon Road and go past a derelict mine straight out of a Hollywood western to a primitive creekside campground at 8,400 feet. The 7.4-mile round-trip hike isn’t technical, but loose talus and the stray tumbling boulder can make for unexpected challenges. True to its name, the summit is less than half a mile from the slightly taller, far craggier, and more menacing 13,441-foot Montgomery Peak in California.
