Hiker Dies of Apparent Heart Attack Near Maroon Bells

A 55-year-old California man was 1.4 miles up the Crater Lake Trail when he apparently succumbed to a heart attack.

Jason Gong, a 55-year-old California man, was hiking near the Maroon Bells with his son when he said he wasn’t feeling well. After the pair separated, Gong had an apparent heart attack, and didn’t respond to CPR by at least one nurse and a doctor on the scene. First responders included Mountain Rescue Aspen and two USFS employees who ran up the trail with a defibrillator.
