Gypsy Moths Force Closure of Connecticut Hiking Preserve

Trail Wood Sanctuary will shut its doors until March to remove a swath of hazardous, moth-killed trees.

The popular Trail Wood Sanctuary in Hampton, Connecticut, will close its trails to visitors from December 1 to March so loggers can remove a number of hazardous dead trees. An infestation of gypsy moth caterpillars is behind the closure; the bugs have been plaguing New England’s forests since last year.
