Fred Beckey, the legendary Northwest mountaineer who pioneered routes up some of the world’s most difficult peaks, died October 30 at the age of 94. In addition to pulling off a long string of first ascents in the Cascades and elsewhere, Beckey wrote the definitive guidebooks to many North American summits and inspired countless climbers.
