Legendary Mountaineer Fred Beckey Dies
The climber, guidebook author, environmentalist, and historian notched a long string of first ascents in his illustrious mountaineering career.

Fred Beckey, the legendary Northwest mountaineer who pioneered routes up some of the world’s most difficult peaks, died October 30 at the age of 94. In addition to pulling off a long string of first ascents in the Cascades and elsewhere, Beckey wrote the definitive guidebooks to many North American summits and inspired countless climbers.
