Make it a game: the search for the perfect fall scene. Find a long ridge rich with sugar maples, for dazzling leaves, throw in some birches for contrast and an inland sea below, almost impossibly blue. Now, hike that ridge, stopping at all the viewpoints, scanning the scene to make sure it’s not an illusion. You’ll win this game every time if you hike the Superior Hiking Trail as the maples peak. The 13 miles from Oberg Mountain to the Caribou Trail is your best bet. A spectacular waterfall is a sure thing, moose sighting a maybe. It’s great if you can find time to add the vistas on the 2-mile long Oberg side loop to your trip.
