In early July, the ice in Pangnirtung Fiord melts out, allowing access to the Weasel River Valley, and the stunning interior sights of Auyuittuq, Inuit for “the land that never melts.” A 25-mile backpack up this deep, U-shaped valley, leads past towering rock walls to a cable crossing over the rushing river, and Pangnirtung Pass. There, Mount Thor, a beautiful horn-shaped peak, with a 4,000 foot sheer west face, comes into view as well as Mount Asgard and the glaciers of the Penny Ice Cap.
