A proposal by Central Maine Power to bring clean hydropower from Canada to Massachusetts has divided local communities, as it would required clear-cutting a swath through pristine wild lands (crossing the Appalachian Trail three times and spanning Kennebec Gorge) to build transmission lines. Proponents say the plan would reduce carbon emissions and create jobs, while opponents argue the construction would damage the environment and might not truly benefit the climate.
