The Becoming an Outdoorswoman program, a national class sponsored here by the New Hampshire Department of Fish and Game, teaches wilderness survival skills–from fire-building to quinzhee construction–in a single-sex environment. And that’s exactly what attracts many of the women who take the class, say participants in a recent winter course. Some note that the competition-free vibe and supportive atmosphere translate to a very empowering experience.
