Politicians and residents are discussing ways to mitigate the risks posed by the 6,500-strong Colockum elk herd between Ellensburg, Wenatchee, and the Columbia River. About 60 elk were killed on the road by vehicles last winter, and some have damaged hay bales and irrigation lines on nearby ranches. Possible solutions include new elk-proof fences and expanding hunting.
