This water year–which begins on October 1–is shaping up to be exceptionally dry in Southern California. Downtown LA has gotten only 0.12 of an inch of rain since the start, just 3 percent of the typical amount. The scant rain means this water year is tied for the fourth-driest start since records began in 1877.
