Congress Looks to Help California Save Water for Future Droughts

The House plans to vote Thursday on a bill making it easier to store water during abundant snow years.

Drought has been the main story throughout California in recent years, but this winter’s heavy Sierra snowpack granted a welcome reprieve. Now, what to do with all that snowmelt? A bill sponsored by Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) and scheduled for a vote Thursday, would make it easier for government agencies to build dams and reservoirs. House Democrats also support the bill, but some environmentalists argue it would impede environmental reviews on future dam projects.
