Abandoned Campfires, Hot Weather Prompt Stage II Fire Restrictions

The Coconino National Forest increased fire regulations as wildfire danger grows.

Despite the Stage I fire restrictions in place across the Coconino National Forest since June 15, rangers discovered 34 abandoned campfires last weekend. That hazard, plus hot weather and dry lightning, led the forest to declare Stage II restrictions starting Thursday. The upgrade puts stricter rules on fires, smoking, and using firearms and machinery.
