Burlington Island, a 396-acre spot on the Delaware River across from Burlington City, New Jersey, has a 100-acre lake, wildlife, history, and the potential to become a public nature refuge, argue local supporters. The site has been closed to the public since 2012, and it also faces a proposal from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to dump river dredge spoils. While the question of dumping works its way through the courts, local officials have recently raised thousands for trail construction.
