When Hawthorn Woods officials decided to create a monarch sanctuary, they looked around for a suitable spot—and found an area of untouched native forest. After clearing out non-native buckthorn and planting perennials like milkweed and wild columbine, the new Brierwood Nature Preserve opened to the public.
