The Appalachian Trail community lost a prominent supporter, volunteer, hiker, and maintainer in May, when Bill Foot died at his Lynchburg, Virginia, home. He was 53. Foot and wife, Laurie, known as “The Happy Feet,” thru-hiked the AT in 1987 and were instrumental in organizing the 1995 Backpacker AT Tag-Team Thru Hike. Beyond the AT, Foot was involved in the American Discovery Trail and efforts to improve trail conditions.

Memorial contributions can be sent to ATC, P.O. Box 807, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425-6331, or ADT Society, P.O. Box 20155, Washington, DC 20041-2155.
