The East Fork of the Greenbrier River cuts straight through 10,000 acres of proposed wilderness, passing through floodplain fields to groves of hemlock and pine to rocky clearings—and in spring, white serviceberry blossoms and wild ramps dot the hardwood slopes. Trace its crystal-clear waters—which offer pools, waterfalls, trout fishing, and crawdad hunting—on this easy 8-mile shuttle overnight. Begin at Island Campground and follow the East Fork Trail #365 on an old railroad grade 0.3 mile to the riverbank. Follow the river for the next 4 miles, watching for the forest’s active beavers on the way. Camp here or a mile farther at Abe’s Run. Continuing north, the trail climbs away from the river through dense forest before ending at Pig’s Ear Road at mile 8.
