Mastodon Island may soon have an actual mastodon–an interactive model of one, that is–if Aurora aldermen approve a $89,289 contract to build it this week. The model is planned for the Phillips Park project, which also includes a mastodon-themed play area and fossil dig. Excavators found real mastodon bones on the site in 1934, inspiring the the Mastodon Island project; the bones are on display in the Phillips Park Visitor Center today.
