The existence and maintenance of the 800-mile Arizona Trail has so far depended largely on volunteers, but it hasn’t been enough. Plus, the trail is threatened by other issues: mining projects, reroutes, and special use permits. Agencies from the federal level on down have come up with a proposal to help the trail—one of just 11 national scenic trails—adapt and thrive in the future.
