Late February is the perfect time to be out and about in southern Arizona’s Eagletail Mountains Wilderness. It’s a place where afternoon temperatures hit the 70’s, and purple and yellow wildflowers dot the washes. Striking rock formations–arches, spires and serrated ridges–serve as a scenic backdrop for saguaros and bighorn sheep while petroglyphs hint of gatherings of the ancient Hohokam. Backpack 15 miles on the Ben Avery Trail, beginning near the freestanding monolith known as Courthouse Rock, and trek east to Double Eagle Peak.
