For the first time in five years, the sea caves near the Apostle Islands are accessible on foot via the frozen Lake Superior. [all images: Tricia Miller]

The caves lie approximately 18 miles west of Bayfield, Wisconsin and are a popular summertime kayaking destination.

Park officials are monitoring ice conditions closely as hikers venture out from the mainland.
