  • Use lip balm, first-aid ointment, or bug dope (deet-based works best) to stoke your fire. Any petroleum-based product can help accelerate a flame to get your fire cranking. Just soak dried tinder (toilet paper or tampon cotton works well) and light. Be sure to have small twigs or grass nearby to feed the fire. The petroleum will buy you an extra few minutes of flame.
  • Treat bug bites with toothpaste. Fluoride acts as an antihistamine to relieve itching.
  • Use sunscreen to remove a leech. Dab a bit on the leech’s nose and it will recoil.
