Every year, Haines locals and tourists gather along the Chilkoot river banks to watch grizzly bears feast on pink salmon swimming upstream to their breeding grounds. On August 11, visitors saw something a little stranger: a man dressed as a bear, trying to convince the grizzlies he was one of them.
At first, the onlookers thought the man, who was jumping up and down just ten feet from a feeding mother bear and her cubs, was one of the animals. Soon, however, they noticed the costume and alerted local police and Fish and Wildlife workers.
When Fish and Wildlife officials attempted to question them, he refused to answer, and fled the scene without removing his outfit. Officers took down his license plate number, and Alaska State Troopers are investigating the incident.
The motive of this mystery man is unknown, but it’s safe to say that this is not the smartest way to view grizzlies.
