The Answer: Arkansas’s Little Red River. “We have the biggest brown trout anywhere,” says Jed Hollan, president of the local Trout Unlimited chapter. And that’s no fish story: The world record brown (40 lbs. 4 oz.) was yanked from the icy waters here in 1992. State fishing regs allow five trout per person per day, but only one can exceed 24 inches.

The Way

Put in at the Dripping Springs launch in Pangburn. Paddle five miles east to the Ramsey access point. This shady stretch is the river’s wildest–and least fished. Get a license and trout permit at agfc.com.
