The Answer

If you want to surround yourself by the densest population of major predators in the Lower 48, go to the Black Canyon in Yellowstone National Park. Doug Smith, a park biologist, says that the canyon hides as many as one griz, wolf, cougar, or black bear every two square miles.

The Way

Scope for the big four on the 17-mile Yellowstone River Trail through Black Canyon. Stay atop the food chain by shouting or singing on the trail, and by properly stowing food in camp. “If you behave properly in carnivore country, the risk is virtually nil,” Smith says. nps.gov/yell
