Wolf howls, waterfalls, moose tracks, the deepest canyon in Minnesota, a string of steep rivers dancing through state parks-the Superior Hiking Trail has it all, plus blue horizon views of Lake Superior, the world’s largest lake. When completed, the trail will be nearly 300 miles long. To date, 211 miles are open.

RECOMMENDED HIKE: A 17.3-mile section of the Superior Trail heading north out of Temperance River State Park and ending at Lutsen Mountain Ski Area traverses five peaks. This is a moderate hike, with some steep sections and slippery spots. The Superior Shuttle (218-834-5511) can get you back to your car.

WHERE: The trailhead at Temperance River State Park is about 275 miles (5 hours) north of Minneapolis. From the town of Schroeder drive 1 mile east on MN 61.

MAPS: The Superior Hiking Trail Association sells section maps (50 cents) and the Guide To The Superior Hiking Trail ($15.95).

CONTACT: SHTA, P.O. Box 4, Two Harbors, MN 55616; (218) 834-2700.
