Lightning Just Missed These Yellowstone Hikers

The bolt struck a tree just a few feet away.

A lightning bolt narrowly missed a group of campers in Yellowstone National Park earlier this month—and one member of the group actually caught it on film.

When a hailstorm broke out unexpectedly over his group’s lakeside campsite, Bruce Hyland, 63, filmed the weather while his friends took cover. When he looked at the film later, Hyland realized he had captured a much-too-close-for-comfort lightning strike. The strike lights up one frame of the film before exploding through the roots of a nearby tree, mere feet away from the campers.
