This has gotta rank high on hiker nightmares, right up there with bears and lightning: A man hiking in McDowell Sonoran Preservenear Scottsdale, Ariz., had to be rescued after falling into a cactus only a quarter-mile up the trail. Yeowch!
Firefighters provided on-site treatment, but had to bring him down with a stokes basket and big wheel. No details on the extent of his injuries, but just think about it: He needed to be rolled out by firefighters after his cactus encounter, and he couldn’t free himself without help in the first place.
I’m guessing it was more than sitting on a prickly pear. Can you imagine getting bearhugged by a saguaro? Terrifying.
