MythBusters Duct Tape Hour

On October 14, the destructive Discovery show is going to put duct tape through its paces.

Who hasn’t marveled at the many ways to use duct tape in the backcountry? Leaky tent? Duct tape that baby. Bad blisters spreading up your heel? A little gauze, a little duct tape, a little steel iron will, and voilá, instant relief. We’ve even branded our Ultimate Fix-It Center with pictures of the sticky stuff.

But most of our duct tape use here at BACKPACKER has been combative or preventative–we bring it in when other sturdy substances fail. The team over at MythBusters is all about destruction. They take myths, people, and substances and push them to their very limits (sort of like our Gear Lab series…although our budget is a tad lighter). And then they watch with glee as those test subjects implode–or bear the weight of their hefty expectations.

On Wednesday, October 14, 9PM ET/PT, MythBusters is devoting their hour-long show to duct tape. The press release says the team will take to the high seas and attempt to lift a 5,000-pound car into the air with, THE TAPE. And it’s all in the name of science.
