Mount Washington’s foul weather is so legendary that it finally got its own museum.
The 6,288-ft. New Hampshire peak, the highest in New England, is known for its extreme year-round conditions and on Friday, the “Extreme Mount Washington” museum opened to the public. The Boston Globe reports that the interactive exhibits will mimic the grisly conditions researchers and scientists must endure when taking measurements at the mountaintop observatory. Some of these challenges include chipping ice off instruments with their fingers and attempting to keep balance on weather measurement equipment in extreme winds.
As many climbers will attest, Mount Washington’s summit view is impeded by fog 60% of the time. Never fear: museum visitors will be able to view photos of what the panoramic view looks like on a clear day.
