Steve Howe has been an active hiker, backpacker, climber, skier and whitewater kayaker for 45 years. He has been a Backpacker Field Editor since 1991.
During his career Howe has telemarked off 20,000-foot Andean peaks, filmed solo on Denali, spent six weeks solo above the Arctic Circle, and undertaken numerous three-week assignment thru-hikes for Backpacker.
Prior to his magazine career, Howe worked 13 years in outdoor retail stores as a salesperson, bike and ski mechanic, and hardgoods buyer before moving into TV consulting and videography, and finally magazine editing, writing, and photography.
Howe currently owns and operates Redrock Adventure Guides, a backpacking and canyoneering guide service based in Torrey, southern Utah, just outside Capitol Reef National Park.
