A 22-year-old hiker was found dead Tuesday on the Fayston section of Vermont’s Long Trail.

The Burlington Free Pressreports that the man, whose name was not immediately released, had departed on a 3-5 day backpacking trip on Monday, but phoned his father late Monday night to report that he’d been soaked by rain and had lost a shoe. Search teams combed the surrounding areas on Tuesday morning and struggled with snowy backcountry conditions before recovering the man’s body that afternoon.

The hiker was carrying a pack with approximately 70 pounds of gear, but state police officials told the paper that “the extent of his gear and experience may not have been ample enough for the conditions he experienced overnight.”
