A 19-year-old man who planned to hike the Pacific Crest Trail died Thursday after collapsing in a county park just miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Los Angeles Timesreports that the man, whose name was not immediately released, phoned his father to report medical distress yesterday afternoon. The father then called 911. By the time paramedics arrived on scene, however, the hiker had gone into arrest and could not be revived.

The county medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
